Web designing

I am now upto to creating my website, i have chosen the graffiti artist "Banksy" as my topic.
I have already created 2 of the three containers which i wanted to have in the website.
Im going to include the header in the actual container design so i dont have to create a seperate Div for a header.

Today we also made buttons on photoshop, they like change when you slide your mouse over them, theyre really cool!
you create the button on photoshop, (do one version of it, and do a second version which is what you will see when the mouse is on it) then save them as two seprate documents (JPEG) then in dream weaver, go to insert>*something*> navigation> then name it, and it wil ask for over, and top. put the links where approriate. and then down the bottom it says "link to.."and then llink it to the html page thing that you want it to go
It actually works!! its SOO cool!!

Planning

First create a Gantt chart, planning the things you haev to do and the time span you have to do it.
first meeting with client= discuss what colour schemes, fonts, layout etc they would like.
Write a brief, including your audience and what colour chemes etc you plan on using.
Second meeting with client= by then you would have reasearched images, and colour schemes, fonts and types of layout to use (also about the topic you are designing for) and created at least 3 thumbnail designs using the criteria (and your research) your client gave you. once the client has chosen which one they like best, and made certain changes to it (if necesary).

Create a conecept sketch of the chosen thumbnail, create another one with the divs only (this makes it easyier to work with on dreamweaver)

Then you have to make the css document, create images and prepare content on photoshop and word. create container backgrounds, headings on photoshop. include the headings in the background container to make it easyier.
My client chose stock hold font, and a pink/red colour scheme, with black and white highlights and shadows

Post for progress on Banksy project

I have completed the brief and Gantt chart, so most of my planning is finished and thumbnail sketches and concept sketches and researched into good webdesign.
although I still need to meet the client, so i guess i will have to change my concept sketch if he/she doesnt like it. Information is the stuff im still gathering, I have collected a number of images for the art gallery. And already have a colour scheme for the whole website-(although that could also change if the client doesnt like it.)

Another effect i thought was pretty cool was this line thing, it looks really neat and you can do it many different colours to look very effective. you have to create a new brush though. create a curved white line on a black background using the pen tool, then go to the layer its on, then ctrl+click to select it, then go to edit>define brush preset, and now you have made the right brush for it (my curve wasnt very good). the define brush preset might not come up the first time, try selecting with magic wand tool)

Photoshop text effects- Lava text

this is a pretty cool tutorial I found, its a lava style text, i thought i might use it for my "the dangers of alcohol" title. http://www.tutorialwiz.com/lava_text/

also a photoshop filter thingy that i thought was pretty neat was the Extrude thingy, it looks awesome, you go to filter>stylize>extrude this is an example of what it looks like:

this is part of what the lava text is, but i kinda stuffed it up, so you cant see all of the text (it was obviously my first time trying this one out haha) and the extrude filter thing is what makes the clouds look like their coming at you. i thought this might be quite a good text to put as my heading because its rather broght and eyecatching, and is quite interesting.

Font stuff

Bleed: instead of having a white border around the paper, the image or background stretches right to the edge of the paper.

Paragraph styles: is the style of font used in different types of paragraphs eg. title, basic, and body paragraphs.

Pen tool: thing you use to make even curves

text wrap (including detecting edges): is when th text goes around the image, and can detect transparent parts around the image so it looks pretrty cool

Text on path: to create different shapes for the text to go along

examples of leaflet design

Leaflet example 1: has nice layout, bright colours and is eye catching. But it seems a bit cluttered and could be a bit hard to focus.

Example 2: nice layout as well, good colour coordination, and it looks stylish. not cluttered like example1 and that makes it easier to read.

example 3: very bad, the text is waaay to small. very cluttered and its pretty dull and boring. But on the brightside, it looks pretty, the plant like designs are pretty effective too.

example4: kind of boring, loses attention really quickly, but the title stands out from the background which is good.

Finished Poster

this is the finished design poster for my amazing (IT) client Simon Gennard

Brief for alcohol leaflet

Tawa college counselling service would like a leaflet designed to alert teenagers to the dangers of drinking excessive alcohol

It must appeal to teenagers, and send the message

It must be bold and colourful, or eye catching to draw young peoples attention (since it is aimed for young adults/teenagers) iIt shouldnt be too long or boring since the attention span of most teenagers is short. -short and sweet, to the point. But also images should be strong and quite graphic so the message is given across more effectivley

The leaflet is a 3 fold one, it has to contain images and quotes, info and stories from teenagers

Information will come from various sources:

-books

-Magazines

-websites

-Emails

-CDs

-people

The Programmes i will be using to create this leaflet will be: Microsoft Word (infomation editing and drafting, publishing), Photoshop (effects, editing images, design of leaflet) InDesign (leaflet layout and text layout).

Design dossier evaluation

whats good:

  • the background contrasts well with the text so its easier to read.
  • Image of simon can be seen, the colours make it stand out (black and white image against coloured background)
  • The reflection of NYC blended in well with the non reflection, and blended in well with the black background layer. also the difference in brightness/luminosity/lightning effects and colour between the reflection and original image make it stand out.

Whats not so good:

  • The text clutters the poster up, making it feel difficult to read. I used a different colour for the questions, but not sure if it really goes with anything...
  • there isnt enough space to fit all the text in.
  • some of the text covers simon's hair...
  • It looks kinda of boring because the text is just all the same.
  • err....the heading looks kinda feminine....only a little bit though!
  • To me the text seems kind of small as well.
  • I called the background image a reflection...but its not because i accidentally flipped the image before i pasted it....so technically its not a reflection...

What I can change to make it better:

  • Space out the boxes a bit more, using the space around the edges as well, use bright green so the question stands out
  • Narrow down the amount of questions to the important ones only, and the introduction.
  • Put different effects on the text layer to make it bolder and brighter. Use " inner glow" and "Outer shadow" and change the blending mode from normal to " diffrence" to make it more interesting.
  • ....umm....im sure Simon wouldnt mind the slight femininity of the heading =D
  • make the text a little bit bigger...but it might come out bigger in the actual printout.
  • I cant change it because its the background layer...hopefully no one notices it...

a new effect i found interesting was the reflection effect, and having its surrounding background blurred using the gaussian blur tool, also adjusting colour modes and making the images darker and lighter is quite effective. The background thats going to be used would be a new york city scene background or a wind turbine background, or a simple background with just one solid colour. If the NY scene is chosen (most likely) the image of simon would be in either a neon colour or black and white, so it will stand out against the colourful newyork city. The fonts i thought suited simon were retro font, a designery frilly font, a bold neon font and a splatter font. they all used bright colours which represents simons design style well since he's into bright bold colours. Simons favourite colours are black/red, so that would most probably be incorporated in the text, and title, since if the new york scene were those colours it would look rather dull and boring...which is not simon's style at all.

Text and font stuff

using photoshop tutorials from this site http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/50-great-photoshop-text-effect-tutorials-part-ii/ we got to learn how to make different types of text for our titles on our design dossier, i chose the spray paint text for simon, but i might change it depending on if he likes it or not

19th february

We learnt how to do all kinds of effects on photoshop using tutorials from the internet, like a smoke effect and a ocean ripple effect.
I learnt how to soften harsh lines, and blend an image to the background, this is done by increasing the pixels on the feather thing, then using a lasso tool and selecting around the image, inverse select, then gaussian blur. you must inverse selct otherwise the actual image will blur and not the background

A design Dossier must be created for my (amazing) client, Simon Gennard. He enjoys Indie music and Indie film. He aspires to be a film director and likes bright, vibrant colours, and his cardigan and waistcoat. his design style includes things to do with bright colours and things with hidden meaning.

The design dossier must include

  • A write up about Simon in relation to digital design taken from an interview

  • A photo which has been amended to suit the subject
  • Interesting page layout

The page must:

  • Reflect the designer's inspiration and interests.
  • Be made using Photoshop and InDesign (Word and other software may also be used where appropriate)
  • Be either 1 or 2 A4 pages (i.e. magazine spread)
  • Reflect the designer's inspiration and interests

  • Be made using Photoshop
